      Cons

Whether you call them thumb drive, flash drive, or even just USB, they’ve become an integral part of our lives. Providing personal, portable data storage an arm’s length away. The demand for high-performance, high-capacity and compact size is becoming the norm. Gone are the days of 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB flash drives providing sufficient enough data capacities, now they just keep each other company as they collect dust.  Consumers want portable storage devices with increased capacity and at the same time be compact and aesthetically pleasing.  Lexar aims to provide the best solution with the Lexar JumpDrive S45 USB 3.0 Flash Drive.

The Flash Drive is available in 16GB (Orange), 32GB (Blue), 64GB (Teal), and 128GB (Black) capacities. This review will focus on the 32GB model which claims read speeds of 150MB/s and 30MB/s write speeds.

      DESIGN

The flash drive itself (cap included) is roughly the size of an Australian 10 cent coin. The USB connector accounts for the majority of the device which will leave you scratching your head as to how Lexar managed to pack so much performance and space in such a small package.

The compactness of the device may hinder those with large hands, or oily hands. Each attempt to remove the device from the cap took several tries to get the perfect grip and tug action to successfully remove the drive. The lanyard loophole is located on the cap which may raise concern as I’m sure a lot of people have finished the work or school day to see that they still have their flash drive cap, but they’re missing the actual drive. I don’t believe this to be a big concern as the compactness makes it so the flash drive fits extremely snuggly into its transparent cap, providing a sense of comfort that the flash drive will not slip out unexpectedly.

      Capacities

      • 16GB in orange (up to 150MB/s read, 20MB/s write)
      • 32GB in blue (up to 150MB/s read, 30MB/s write)
      • 64GB in teal (up to 150MB/s read, 45MB/s write)
      • 128GB in black (up to 150MB/s read and 45MB/s write)

      PERFORMANCE

To test the performance three benchmark applications were used to measure read and write speeds. The flash drive was plugged into the USB 3.0 port of a laptop PC to provide the most optimal and accurate speeds possible.

      Check Flash 1.16.2

       Lexar S45 CheckFlash

Check Flash achieved a read speed of 132MB/s and write speed of 28MB/s. These are well within the speeds that Lexar says the S45 Flash Drive can achieve.

      USBDeview

      Lexar S45 USBDeview Test

USBDeview benchmarking tests achieved read speeds of 134MB/s and write speeds of 36MB/s. These benchmarks are similar to the results achieved using Check Flash.

      USB Flash Benchmark

      Lexar S45 USB Flash Benchmark

USB Flash Benchmark achieved similar read speeds as the two previous benchmarking tools with files larger than 512KB. Averaging reads speed of the mid 130MB/s, reaching a top read speed of 136MB/s. The write speed achieved by Flash Benchmark is where the significant difference between the three tools lie. While USBDeview and Check Flash averaged write speeds in the vicinity of 30MB/s. USB Flash Benchmark achieved writes speeds of plus 50MB/s, achieving a top write speed of 70MB/s. Overall there was a consistent read and write performance of files over the size of 512KB.

      CONCLUSION

The Lexar JumpDrive S45 range is the perfect compact and convenient way to expand any PC, TV, or car media and stereo systems storage. The compact form allows for the flash drive to be plugged into any USB 3.0 or 2.0 port and have it become part of it.

The pros of this device significantly outweigh the one major con which was having the lanyard loophole located on the cap of the flash drive instead of the flash drive itself. However the drive fits tightly into the cap, not allowing for the drive to wiggle or move.

It’s easy to recommend the JumpDrive S45 flash drive. The 32GB model tested and lived up to the expectations set by Lexar. Doing benchmark testing revealed read and write speeds extremely close to those which Lexar boasts. Even in real world application of copying various media files from PC to flash drive and vice versa was consistently fast.

In addition, Lexar have bundled with the drives with their EncryptStick Lite software to protect files against deletion, loss, and corruption. Lexar also offer three years limited. Priced at AUD$24.99 from Australian online and in-store retailers or $13.75USD (roughly $18AUD) from Amazon (shipping not included), it is an easy and affordable purchase that will deliver exactly on what it offers.

Does it get hot? I’ve noticed that a lot of the smaller sized ones suffer from over heating.

While doing I was grabbing the flash drive from the blue head part. At the time I hadn’t noticed the heat. But yes, immediately after use the device does tend to get quite hot.

I would like to see some repeated or longer tests, because flash drives normally perform good UNTIL they overheat and then they slow down a lot! Count with this.
